Playa “Principal” is the port of Puerto Escondido.  Puerto Escondido,  “The Hidden Port”  was founded as a coffee port”.   Oaxaca was a major coffee producer and used this port for it’s export.  Oaxacan coffee production declined as the price of this commodity fell.  Still today great coffee is grown in the mountains above Puerto.  Also as fishing port it is obviously where all fishermen are making it a great place to pick up fresh fish; or to charter a boat for the day. Around 10.00 a.m. you can by fish fresh from the catch.   Also Dolphin and turtle tours are available.  Playa Principal is not recommended for swimming but makes up for it for it’s atmosphere. There are Palapas along the beach, some offer nice seafood. Right behind you find el Adoquin a shopping district.
